HELLESDON & SPROWSTON BRASS
of Norwich in the County of Norfolk
Jim Windley

Jim is our Principal Euphonium Player.
Jim started playing cornet at the age of 11 at Stalham Secondary School, being taught by Jack Gibson. Later when the school band needed a euphonium player and he was told he had to switch to euphonium.
During his teens Jim played with various band’s including Drayton band; then in his late teens, in a move that brought a collective sigh of relief from the musical world, gave up playing.
In 1995, when Jim’s daughter Laura started to learn the cornet he took up the euphonium, and took lessons with East Anglia’s top tenor horn player – Linda Purdy. In a result that was more due to Linda’s skill than Jim’s talent he passed his grade 8 at the age of 40!
He has since played with various bands in Norfolk and Suffolk, and had another break from playing.
Jim joined Hellesdon and Sprowston band in 2006 and enjoys playing with a group of ‘really nice people’.
Jim’s most memorable brass band moment is getting time off lessons for band practice at school, and playing carol’s with the school band for the patients at Little Plumstead hospital.
